It is said that dogs are similar to their owners. And all parents have a basic, instinctive need to know how their children resemble them. Smoky, exotic, wild, but also classic - Jens Bettenheimer's wines unmistakably resemble their creator.
He has a passion for Burgundy grape varieties, typical Rheinhessen varieties as well as for the classic Silvaner.
„I aim to produce unique wines because only these are unmistakable in substance and character!“
Craftsmanship, Science, Vision
Most of the vines, over 30 years old, are stripped of their leaves with meticulous and demanding work before flowering. Every second shoot from the stretch arch is removed by hand and of course, this manual process is adapted to the respective grape variety. For vineyard work the various moon phases are taken into account in order to guarantee an optimal leaf-fruit ratio.
His thesis, "Reduction of copper and sulphur in organic viticulture", and the contacts he has built up as a result are always helpful when it comes to plant protection. Harvesting the grapes by hand and using small containers allow for grape processing without any pumping.
My vision is to bottle expressive wines that are characteristic for the vintage, variety and our chalky terroir. The journey is the destination!
GAULT MILLAU wine guide (3 grapes) writes: "...strong wines with character… ...The triumvirate of Pinot Gris is a real benchmark..." "...Jens Bettenheimer is not a mainstream man..."
EICHELMANN wine guide (3 stars): "the collection presents itself solidly on a very good level"
VINUM wine guide (3 stars): "The result is mostly individual wines with character"
RUDOLF KNOLL: "Masterly ... ... like someone who's on his way up."
STUART PIGOTT: "With promising wines, Jens Bettenheimer clearly claims success in northern Rheinhessen".
WEINWELT: "Jens Bettenheimer is a pioneer. Young and ambitious and unimaginably meticulous in his work in the vineyard and in the cellar."
There are no recipes!
A new building, embedded in a stony, sunny slope within the vineyards of Ober-Ingelheim, houses our white and red wines where they mature in different containers.
Some of the age-old, traditional Rhine-Hessian barrels from our old cellar could move with us. We were overjoyed to be able to give valuable natural yeasts and bacteria, which have been established over decades, a new home. Depending on the quality and vintage, our wines mature in wooden barrels, stainless steel tanks and granite eggs and remain on the whole yeast until filling.
Events and news
The best way to get to know us and our wines is to attend one of the many JB events held at our winery or at our restaurant.
Restaurant and accommodation
Staying over at a winery with a restaurant to boot is something special!
In our farm’s former cowshed we have room for about 50 people and we serve you our individual wine collection under the old cross vault. There is something for everyone among our freshly prepared hot and cold dishes.
We can accommodate an additional 50 to 60 guests in our beautiful garden with a covered sun terrace. The cowshed and the sun terrace are wheelchair accessible.
If you would like to spend a few days at the winery, you can book one of our double rooms. For longer stays you can also book both rooms as a holiday flat.
